Mazda will debut two models in its new 3 range of hatchbacks at the Geneva motor show next month. Representing both ends of the performance spectrum, Mazda will display the fuel-sipping Mazda3 i-stop and its flagship MPS versions.

The i-stop combines a stop-start system - in which the engine cuts out when the car is stationary to save fuel - with the MZR 2.0-litre Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) petrol engine to offer fuel savings of up to 12 per cent on the EU Urban cycle compared to the current 3.

At the other end of the scale, the MPS "sport compact" version (pictured) uses a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which Mazda claims features "improved fuel economy and emissions that satisfy Euro Stage 5".

The programme manager for the all-new Mazda3, Yoshiyuki Maeda, said: “The new Mazda3 series takes a significant step ahead in both the realms of driving performance and environmental technology to lead the way toward a new generation of motoring.”

Mazda RX-8 or Mazdaspeed3?

So, I've always had my eye on the Mazdaspeed3 but the RX-8 is more expensive... it has lower horsepower and a smaller engine.
So... is there something I'm missing? I know the RX-8 looks better but that doesn't really affect my purchase.

Speed3 hands down is the best value for the money compared to ANY car in it's class. I am actually waiting to buy one myself when my lease is up on my current Mazda. I sell these vehicles, and if anyone was debating between the two of these, and they were here with me, we'd go for a ride and they would come back and buy the Speed3.

The RX-8 is usually purchased by people that have had rotary engine vehicles before, and if you've never drive an RX-8, you'd be surprised at how the power feels when it comes on.

If you're buying this to keep long-term however, the RX-8 might still be a bit more saught-after in the future. They will continue to produce Speed vehicles and the RX-8 seems to be sticking around too.
