Muncie man killed in 1-69 crash - Muncie Star Press
Chris D. Ransom, 60, died at the scene after his 2008 Chevrolet Aveo slid underneath a trailer that became detached from a semi driven by Vernon R. Miller, 60, Toledo, Ohio.
As a result of the 8:45 a.m. accident, southbound traffic was detoured for about five hours Friday.
Authorities said Miller was driving in the northbound lanes when he lost control of the 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer, which was loaded with batteries and registered to Rural King Farm Supply.
The semi crashed through steel tension wires designed to avoid "cross-over" accidents on the interstate, and the trailer became detached, traveling into southbound traffic and Ransom's vehicle, according to ISP Sgt. Mike Burns.
A third motorist, Natalie Stoner, 55, Pendleton, lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Impala after hitting crash debris in the southbound lanes and slid into the median. She was not injured.
Burns said the semi-tractor trailer was intact when it went through the safety barrier, which was not capable of absorbing the impact of a vehicle as massive as a semi.
