But no bank today wants to take on a big new customer whose outlook is so uncertain. Since August JLR has been losing money, and Tata has poured in a reported £400m in debt and equity. Before then the firm had been on a roll, with Land Rover sales breaking records and Jaguars doing well after years in the doldrums. The credit crunch stopped all that. Mr Smith believes that in six months some of the world’s 12m or so dollar millionaires will start to buy premium cars again—not as many as before, but enough to put JLR back in profit.

Even if they believed him, bankers are now obsessively risk-averse. “This is equity risk, not credit risk,” says one: if equity investors were to put money into JLR today, they would want a 40-50% return. That misses the point, says Mr Smith—all JLR needs is normal commercial lines of credit. If banks won’t do that alone, then they might with a government guarantee.

JLR heads the queue for government-help to carmakers, though Tata today is meeting its immediate needs. It has applied for £400m from the European Investment Bank, and hopes some of that, and up to £500m of commercial-bank lending, will be guaranteed by the British government. But noises from that source have been confusing. A promised £2.3 billion in loan guarantees for the car industry unveiled by the government on January 27th seems vague and inaccessible, the firm says. JLR has discussed securitising assets, such as its inventory of cars, with potential lenders, to no avail. It might be able to use Bank of England funding when the central bank begins to buy company debt.

How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?

I have a 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas and would like to know how to check the transmission fluid if it needs to be changed and how to add more if necessary.

Start engine, keeping transmission in park. Open the hood.

Near the back of your engine bay (close to the bottom of your windshield) should be a dipstick, probably with a red handle. This is your transmission fluid dipstick. You may or may not have to flip the handle up to pull it out of it's tube.

Pull out the dipstick, near the end of it should be some hashmarked areas with "Full" and "Add". If it's at or near full, leave it alone. If it's just below full, and your engine hasn't warmed up yet, leave it alone. If it's at Add, look into your owners manual to see what kind of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) your Jag requires. Purchase it at your local auto parts store or dealership, along with a small funnell.

Again, with the engine running and transmission in park, remove your transmission dipstick, insert the funnell, and SLOWLY add the correct ATF. Maybe a fourth of a quart between inserting the dipstick all the way in and checking the level. When it's within the "full" zone, close it all up, and pat yourself on the back for having done something that most Jaguar owners simply leave to their butlers to do.

Should i trade in 2004 Jaguar XJ for Phaeton?

I bought a 2004 Jaguar XJ (first year of this version) pre owned in early 2007 at the depreciated value , it has given me nothing but issues, especially with its taillights, which are supposed to last for a long time.

I like large sedans. So, Iwas thinking about trading it in for the large Volkswagen Phaeton, you can get very good deals on them since they didn't sell well.

Maybe it was my fault for buying a model from the first year it came out, but it is a nice car in a good price range and so is the Pheaton.

So if anyone has experience or know enough about the Phaeton, can you give me some advice as to what I can do. Some people have suggested just trading it in for a new Altima, but i don't like those. An they cost pretty much the same with the depreciated value.

do they even MAKE the Phaeton anymore?

If you're looking for a good full size sedan with lots of guts, comfortable, nice looking, good mileage, etc consider a 1 or 2 year old Avalon. They're basically a Lexus ES350 without all the glitz. You can find them for around $24K used with about 20,ooo miles or less. Whatever you do, you should dump that Jag. Riding the bus is more dependable

Does anyone know the song used in the 2006 Jaguar XJ holiday commercial?

Does anyone know the song used in the Jaguar XJ holiday commercial. The ad is for the 2006 holiday season and shows that Blue Tooth, Ipod and all this other stuff come with the Jag for a limited time only...

I have looked everywhere but I can not find anything on the music. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
